Comforting Split Pea Soup

Green soup?

Yep, green soup. Don’t knock it till you try it. Some people throw some hate on pea soup. “It looks gross! Who wants to eat green slop?” They really are missing out on a fantastic soup.

I’m here to tell you that split pea soup is a delicious, comforting, and goes so dang well with a crusty bread.

What kind of meat?

I normally use the ham bone from either Easter or Christmas ham. Once you cut the ham off the bone, simply toss the bone into a ziplock bag and store in your freezer.

If you don’t really use ham with bone in, you can buy soup ham bones at the grocery store. If you can’t find those, I love using a smoked ham hock. That adds some amazing flavor to this soup.

For this recipe you can use the meaty ham bone or 1-2 ham hocks.

  • 1/2 cup chopped carrot
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion

4 cups chicken broth*, 16 ounces dried split peas, 1 ham bone with meat*, 1 teaspoon dried marjoram, 1 teaspoon Greek seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 cup chopped celery, 1/2 cup chopped carrot, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1 dash salt and pepper
  • Every 20m, stir the pea soup. Keep an eye on the moisture level. If the soup appears dry, add a cup of chicken broth and stir in. You might add a total of 2 cups chicken broth to keep the right consistency.
  • Once peas and veggies are soft and simmering is done, remove the meat/bone. Dish into bowls and enjoy with crusty bread.

Notes

I make my own chicken broth using 4 cups boiling water and 4 tsp Knorr Chicken Bouillon powder
You can use an old ham bone with some meat still on it or if you want to add some amazing taste, grab a large smoked ham hock or 2.
