I love making Asian food. So much flavor packed into the dishes and my kids love eating leftovers whenever I make it. Asian food is also filling but light. So it won’t sit heavy in your gut for hours afterwards. If you skip the rice, this is a low calorie dish.
What kind of beef?
The cut of beef is really up to you. I’ve used flank steak, various roasts, often whatever is on sale. When making Asian dishes I rarely use chuck roast since it falls apart when cooked.
If you are going to grill it on skewers, I would opt for a steak cut. If you use a roast, trim the fat while you slice it into strips.
Cutting cold, slightly frozen beef is always easiest. You’ll see in the video, it’s gets a little tricky at the end. If you have a meat slicer, that’s just golden!
Tips for cooking
Grilling: if you choose to grill the marinated beef, get your grill grate very hot and use some oil on your grates so the beef doesn’t stick. I use my manual oil sprayer since aerosol reacts poorly to open flame. You must soak the skewers if using wooden ones. Dry wooden skewers will burn away fast.
Stir Fry: I’m a huge fan of stir frying this dish. I don’t have a wok, so I use my cast iron skillet. You’ll want to get your pan very hot and allow the oil to heat up as well. Be sure to toast your sesame seeds in a dry pan first!
Slow Cooker: If you have a busy day or work, this would be a great cooking option. You can choose any roast for the slow cooker. I recommend using a programmable slow cooker so that it stops cooking when the time is complete and won’t burn your dish.
